Tabula Rasa is a popular Latin phrase meaning “Blank Slate.” The owners of Tabula Rasa Brewing, a brand-new Brewery in the Rail Yard District of Jacksonville, believe that craft beer is changing the country and the world. They view the local craft beer scene and their recently-begun involvement as a new adventure, a blank slate, for beer.
The brewery was founded in September of 2018 by Randy Peterson, his wife, Jackie, and their son Brian, who all currently run the business. The building is split into a large brewing space and a 1700 square foot taproom, which is designed with an industrial vibe.
What really makes Tabula Rasa especially unique is its outdoor Green Space. This large outside area comes complete with scattered picnic tables and places to get comfortable. This Green Space is outside both the front and back doors, and the easy access to beautifully manicured nature makes for a very relaxing time.
The staff at Tabula Rasa encourage families and friends to come and hang out in their comfortable taproom and relaxing backyard. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a tasty craft beer while sitting outside in the grass to wipe your slate clean.
Randy, Jackie, and Brian are passionate about brewing beer. Randy has been an avid brewer for over 25 years, Jackie is a beer critic, and Brian has built his own brewing rig. This passion and love for the brewing process has led to some tasty results when it comes to Tabula Rasa’s original beers. New beers are released just about every week. The tap room currently has eight taps, each of which pour an original Tabula Rasa brew.
- Corbett Street Cream Ale is the flagship Ale of Tabula Rasa. It’s a light and crisp refreshing classic named for the brewery’s long-sought street address.
- Tropical Ale is a light ale brewed with Mosaic hops that give it crisp and refreshing hints of citrus, mango, and pineapple.
- Scarlet Ibis is a locally popular IPA with a thick hearty blend of bitterness and malt.
- Garcon de Soleil is a crisp Belgian Ale with a fruity aroma and a hint of spice for an extra zing.
- Crazy Mona is a Coconut Porter with a dark roasted flavor and sweet coconut undertones.
- Tartanic is a crowd-pleasing Scottish Ale with a strong nutty malt quality that makes it popular among the locals.
Make sure to keep checking the taproom for new beers. You never know what the Peterson family is going to come up with next.
Tabula Rasa Brewing is open for business from 3pm to 10pm on Tuesdays through Thursdays, from noon to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and from noon to 8pm on Sundays. They are closed on Mondays. Like a lot of smaller local breweries, they don’t serve food, but they welcome customers to bring in their own food. There are a lot of local restaurants nearby willing to deliver.
There are occasional food trucks around the area during events that you can enjoy as well. A fun addition are three porthole-style windows imbedded in the wall that give you a glimpse into the brewing process behind the scenes, which give the feeling of being on an old ship.
And there’s nothing quite like enjoying a few quality beers and a giant game of Jenga between friends. So, bring the whole family and relax in the spacious and green backyard. Tabula Rasa Brewing is a wonderful new addition to the Jacksonville craft brewery scene and shows a lot of potential to become one of the leading faces of the Florida craft beer movement.
